PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend while she was moving out of their apartment has been sentenced to life in prison.
KPTV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/237OX7F ) that 50-year-old Daniel Wyant was sentenced Friday for the November 2014 shooting of 33-year-old Monica Van Laer. A jury found him guilty of murder on March 23. Wyant must serve at least 25 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Wyant shot Van Laer in front of her family members when she came to collect her belongings from the Portland apartment they had shared. He then shot himself under the chin, but he survived his injuries.
At the sentencing, Van Laer’s sister said she hopes the case can raise awareness for domestic violence as one positive thing to come from her sister’s death.
