SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah residents paid $18.1 billion in federal income tax last year.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1X6WNKR ) that according to the IRS Data Book for fiscal year 2015, the amount of taxes paid by Utah individuals increased by $1.92 billion from the previous years, or 12 percent.

In fiscal year 2015 Utah residents paid an average of about $6,036 for every man, woman and child living here.

The IRS data shows that Utah residents filed 1.12 million individual returns, with almost 989,000 of them receiving refunds that totaled $2.69 billion. The average refund was about $900.

The book also reports that income tax paid by Utah businesses totaled $1.31 billion in 2015.
