PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Authorities in Maine say a Westbrook police officer shot an armed man who was threatening suicide early Saturday morning.

Westbrook police chief Janine Roberts says the man who was shot is alive and being treated at Maine Medical Center.

The Portland Press Herald reports (bit.ly/1qdpU56) the incident took place at 5:56 a.m. on Longfellow Street in Portland.

Police say the man was armed with a handgun. His identity has not been released.

The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating the incident.

The name of the officer also was not released.

Westbrook is just west of Portland.
