MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont farmers may now spread manure on their fields but are urged to check field conditions first.

Friday marked the end of the yearly winter manure spreading ban.

The Agency of Agriculture is urging farmers to assess the field conditions before spreading to make sure that they are in compliance with regulations.

The agency says accepted agricultural practices require that manure be applied in a way that does not result in runoff to surface water or across property lines.

The agency recommends that farmers wait until the snow is off fields before spreading manure. It also advises not to spread manure on saturated ground or before major rain events.

The winter manure spreading ban has been in place since 1995..
