PERRYVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Police are investigating the shooting death of a Memphis, Tennessee, man by a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy.

State police say the man was wanted in connection with a theft investigation in Pulaski County and was armed when he confronted law officers and was shot about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say the shooting took place along Highway 9 in Perry County, about 45 miles west of Little Rock. State police say the Johnson County deputy was assisting Perry County deputies at the time of the shooting.

The names of the dead man and the deputy have not been released.

State police say a report will be given to the Perry County prosecuting attorney to determine if the shooting was justified.
