BEL AIR, Md. (AP) - The Harford County Sheriff’s Office says deputies shot a man who was suicidal and fired at them from a home in Bel Air.

Department spokeswoman Cristie Kahler said in a news release that 42-year-old James L. Ward was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore after the incident Thursday.

Baltimore County Police said in a statement that Ward is a 19-year veteran of the Baltimore County department.

Kahler says deputies responded to a report of a suicidal person who was drinking and had fired shots from a handgun inside the home.

The Sheriff’s Office says that for two hours, deputies tried to persuade Ward to surrender peacefully. Law enforcers say about 2:40 p.m., Ward shot at deputies in a tactical vehicle.

Officials say two deputies shot Ward. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
