COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley and members of South Carolina’s military are joining forces to support the children of military families.

A proclamation celebrating April as the “Month of the Military Child” is to be signed by Haley at the Statehouse on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

Joining Haley will be South Carolina Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., and his wife, Barbara.

Military leaders from Fort Jackson, McEntire Joint National Guard Base, Shaw Air Force Base and Joint Base Charleston are expected to attend.

The tradition began about 30 years ago to pay tribute to the youngsters who are faced with daily challenges when a parent or caregiver deploys far from home, or loses their life.
