LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Officials say a former band teacher at one of the state’s most prestigious high schools has been arrested on charges that he had sex with an underage former student.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach tells news outlets that 40-year-old Michael Appelbaum was arrested Tuesday after a former student told police she had had a sexual relationship with Appelbaum while she attended the Gwinnett County School of Mathematics.

Jail records show Appelbaum is facing multiple counts of aggravated child molestation and one count of sexual assault by a teacher.

Appelbaum has denied the allegations, which authorities say took place between November 2011 and August 2012 at the school and the student’s home.

Appelbaum, who taught at the school for nearly eight years, resigned last month after authorities began investigating the accusations.
