CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - A state prison inmate has been sentenced to an additional 30 years for killing his cellmate in a fight at the maximum-security Western Correctional Institution near Cumberland.

Allegany County Assistant State’s Attorney Erich Bean says 26-year-old Venell Harris pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced Thursday in Cumberland.

Bean says 30-year-old Darrell Murray was found unresponsive and tied to his bunk with pieces of torn bedsheet on the morning of July 29. The prosecutor says another piece of bedsheet was tied around Murray’s neck. Bean says an autopsy concluded Murray died from multiple injuries to his head and torso, with possible asphyxia.

Harris was already serving 15 years for attempted second-degree murder in Queen Anne’s County.

Murray was serving a nine-year sentence for a Baltimore drug conviction.
