HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A Huntsville man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his 91-year-old neighbor while he burglarized her home.

News outlets report that 32-year-old John Clayton Owens was sentenced by a judge Wednesday in the August 2011 strangulation of Doris Richardson.

A Madison County jury had recommended the life sentence in February when they convicted Owens of capital murder. Prosecutors had been urging Judge Alison Austin to override the jury’s recommendations and instead sentence Owens to death.

Madison County Assistant District Attorney Tim Gann said Richardson was home alone, in bed, when Owens entered the woman’s home and attacked her.
