GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - Minnkota Power Cooperative says it will purchase wind energy from NextEra Energy Resources with an expansion of the Oliver County Wind Energy Center near the town of Center.

NextEra Energy Resources is developing the 100 megawatt wind farm addition, which is expected to begin operation in early 2017. All of the energy will be sold to Minnkota under a 35-year agreement. The expansion will feature 44 General Electric wind turbines, each having a capacity of 2.3 megawatts.

Minnkota President and CEO Mac McLennan says nearly 35 percent of Minnkota’s electric generation capacity will come from wind by early 2017.

The company says the wind farm expansion will help Minnkota make progress toward compliance with an anticipated federal regulation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants.
