FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Fort Smith police say a 15-year-old boy was shot in the face after a man demanded money from him.

Police said in a news release Wednesday that the boy was walking from his home to a friend’s house Tuesday, when he was stopped by a man in a passing car. Authorities say the man pointed a gun at the boy and demanded money.

Sgt. Daniel Grubbs said the boy fled on foot, but was pursued and shot on the right side of his face, just below his nose. Grubbs said surveillance footage showed the boy was dropped off at a hospital at 11:30 p.m. He was treated at Sparks Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
