FREEPORT, Maine (AP) - Authorities in Maine say a Portland man is in critical condition after he shot himself in the head three times with a flare gun.
Police say 65-year-old Daniel Abbott was pulled from the cab of his pickup truck by two motorists who stopped to help.
Troopers say they used a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in the cab, preventing the flames from spreading to a propane tank in the truck’s bed.
Abbott remained in critical condition Wednesday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
State police say they’re investigating the incident as an attempted suicide.
The incident happened Tuesday morning in the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 in Freeport.
