SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Police on Thursday asked for the public’s help in solving the puzzling case of a young, single San Francisco mother’s killing and the disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter.

San Francisco Police Commander Greg McEachern and several investigators, including an FBI agent, held a press conference where a few new details emerged and a vital piece of evidence was displayed.

Nicole Fitts, 30, was last seen April 1 aboard a san Francisco Municipal subway wearing a blue Best Buy shirt with her nametag. McEachern said Fitts was “summoned by someone known to her” that night, but said investigators don’t know who that was. McEachern produced a large plywood board spray-painted with peculiar markings that he said covered the hastily dug, shallow grave where the body of Fitts was found April 8 in a San Francisco park near a playground.

Fitts’ 2-year-old daughter Arianna was last seen in late February. The girl’s living arrangements have complicated the investigation into her disappearance. Arianna often stayed in Oakland and elsewhere in the care of someone other than her mother, McEachern said. McEachern said investigators “presume” Arianna is alive.

“Somebody out there knows where she is,” McEachern said. “We are pleading with you. Contact us. Somebody knows some information. Please help us bring home that beautiful 2 ½-year-old girl who is still missing.”

McEachern also called on anyone who may know what the markings on the plywood mean or have seen the board to call police.

McEachern said the FBI joined the case last week and helped serve a search warrant in Oakland Wednesday. McEachern said several other homes in the San Francisco Bay Area have been searched and that some potential witnesses aren’t cooperating. He declined to say of investigators have a suspect in their sites. No one has been arrested.
