SANTEE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities in South Carolina say a man who kidnapped his estranged wife and led police on an hour-long chase was shot by officers after he fired at them.
Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said 34-year-old Daniel Ward was wounded Thursday and taken to a Columbia hospital. Lewis did not know Ward’s condition.
The sheriff says neither the officers nor Ward’s wife were hurt.
Lewis says Ward was supposed to be in court Thursday for violating a restraining order against his wife. She was on the phone with a prosecutor when Ward showed up and kidnapped her at gunpoint.
Lewis says police chased Ward for an hour before his car stopped in the median of Interstate 95 and he shot at officers.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
