MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis police say a 6-year-old boy who was hit by a car on Monday has died from his injuries.

Police spokesman Louis Brownlee told media that Christopher Smith, who would have turned 7 on Sunday, was pronounced dead at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. The boy was a first-grader at Gardenview Elementary School.

Police have charged Arthur Carpenter, the driver who hit the boy, with not having a driver’s license or insurance.

Brownlee said he did not know whether Carpenter might face other charges. He said police are still investigating.
