LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A district court judge is retiring from his post in Lancaster County.

Judge Steven Burns has told Gov. Pete Ricketts of his intention to retire effective May 31, noting that it was a privilege “to serve the people of Nebraska in this position of trust.”

He began his district court judgeship in the state’s 3rd Judicial District in 1997.

State authorities say the first step in replacing Burns will be for the Nebraska Judicial Resources Commission to determine whether, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a need to replace him or whether the judgeship should be moved into another district.
