MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) - A driver is in custody for hitting two girls with his truck following a police chase in Dane County.

Middleton Police Chief Charles Faulke says the girls suffered serious injuries when they were struck at an intersection late Thursday afternoon. Faulke says the girls, ages 12 and 13, are in stable condition Friday.

Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy saw the truck operating erratically and speeding. When the deputy tried to stop it, the driver fled. The deputy terminated the pursuit once they reached Middleton. Minutes later the truck hit the two girls.

The driver drove away and hit other vehicles before coming to a stop. He was arrested and taken to the hospital.
