LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Basketball star Magic Johnson has returned to his hometown of Lansing, raising money for a scholarship program.
The Lansing State Journal (https://on.lsj.com/1MLVdhv ) reports Johnson was joined by members of Earth, Wind & Fire and more than 1,200 guests inside the Lansing Center on Thursday for the Celebration of the Lansing Promise dinner. The Lansing Promise scholarship program gives money to students who graduate from private or public schools within the Lansing district.
Johnson said he wanted to repeat successes of last year’s inaugural dinner. He said he expects to raise another $1 million for students that can be used for tuition at Michigan State University and Lansing Community College.
Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo said that everybody “needs a special person to drag people together, and Magic is that person for this community.”
