GRETNA, La. (AP) - A 63-year-old Metairie man convicted of sexual battery of a 5-year-old girl has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Mario Chavez, who was found guilty last week of abusing a girl in June 2014, faced 25 to 99 years in prison.
The New Orleans Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1NFbD6e) Chavez was sentenced Thursday by Judge Adrian Adams in Gretna.
Adams denied a defense request for a new trial and ordered that at least 25 years of the sentence be served without probation, parole or suspended sentence.
Chavez will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life if he is ever released from prison.
