HANOVER, Va. (AP) - Residents in Hanover County may soon be able to keep chickens in their backyards.
WRIC-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Qrxaz9) the county’s planning commission approved an ordinance on Thursday that would allow chickens in residential areas. It’ll now head to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors.
This ordinance only allows for six chickens, all of which must be tagged. Homeowner associations are able to have stricter policies if they want.
Some citizens say they support the decision to allow the chickens.
Resident Steve Chippendale says he’s been raising chicken on his Ashland farm for years, adding that chickens provide people with a source of food.
Some people are concerned with the noise that having chickens may bring, but Chippendale says chickens are fairly quiet birds.
