BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - The Secretary of State’s office and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources have begun the process to find vendors who will provide ferry service to the new $360,000 Deer Island public pier.

The Mississippi Press reports (https://bit.ly/1U8pKrh) a workshop will be held May 3 in Biloxi to allow vendors to receiving certification to transport passengers to and from Deer Island.

DMR executive director Jamie M. Miller calls Deer Island one of South Mississippi’s natural treasures.

The majority of Deer Island was purchased by the state in 2002 for $17 million.

The DMR is also working on an informative program for Deer Island during the summer months which will include a seasonal tour guides to educate visitors about the island’s coastal preserve.
