FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A 17-year-old boy facing trial on charges of beating and running over a Sikh man has committed suicide.

The Fresno Bee reported Friday (https://bit.ly/1VNYlfh) that Alexis Mendoza killed himself at his home on April 19, four days after posting $115,000 bail.

Mendoza was being tried as an adult on charges of pulling up to 68-year-old Amrik Singh Bal on Dec. 26, beating him and running a Dodge sedan over the man.

Police said Mendoza and a passenger in the car targeted Singh because he was wearing a turban and traditional Sikh robes.

Mendoza was facing up to 13 years in prison if convicted of charges that included assault with a deadly weapon and hate crime.

His passenger, 22-year-old Daniel Coronel Wilson, is facing a felony assault charge.
