ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Volunteer fire departments across the state will open their doors this weekend in hopes of recruiting new members.
The departments hold open houses each year to educate the public about what it takes to become a volunteer firefighter.
Volunteer fire companies began stepping up recruitment efforts after years of declining memberships. The Fireman’s Association of the State of New York has said that while they’ve been able to attract more volunteers in recent years, they also are handling more calls.
The recruitment drive will take place Saturday and Sunday.
