INKSTER, Mich. (AP) - Police say a 2-year-old boy has died after he was found unconscious in a bathtub with scalding water in suburban Detroit.

The boy was in the tub Monday night at a home in Inkster. An autopsy was performed Tuesday, but no cause of death was immediately released.

Inkster police Lt. Jeffrey Twardzik says the boy was in 2-3 inches of “scalding hot water.” He says investigators were trying to determine how the water was turned on. The boy’s mother was in custody.

Twardzik says the toddler and three siblings had been removed from the home by child welfare workers but were returned within the past year.

A neighbor, Mark Patterson, says the mother was “frantic” and tried to save the boy. He says it was a “tragic accident.”
