BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Proponents of a plan to redevelop the site of the Burlington Town Center mall are urging city officials to give it their approval.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1qQG3Nz ) developer Don Sinex and officials with Mayor Miro Weinberger’s administration are seeking the city council’s preliminary approval of a 1.3 million-square-foot redevelopment of the mall into apartments, retail and office spaces.

Weinberger is asking councilors to hold a May 2 vote on a pre-development agreement he proposed last Thursday. He has said that the $200 million redevelopment plan would create 270 homes and 900 permanent jobs. Business owners on Monday lobbied councilors to support the project.

Council President Jane Knodell says her colleagues may need more time.

Sinex says he hopes to break ground on the project in early 2017.
