ODESSA, Texas (AP) - An ex-high school teacher in West Texas faces up to 170 years in prison for having sexual contact with two female students.

The Odessa American (https://bit.ly/1MW9wjx ) reports the penalty phase continues Tuesday for 45-year-old Jay Dee Burns.

The former Odessa Permian High School instructor pleaded guilty Monday to nine charges - four counts of an improper relationship between an educator and a student, three counts of sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child and stalking.

Burns was a social studies teacher and academic decathlon coach.

Odessa police began investigating Burns in March 2015 when an 18-year-old was treated for an overdose and she mentioned the teacher. A 16-year-old girl also reported having sexual contact with Burns. The girls knew each other.

Burns resigned last June.
