OCEAN VIEW, Hawaii (AP) - The Hawaii Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after a man in police custody died.

Police say officers on Monday went to a home in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision because of a 911 call from a man who said he had been shot.

When they arrived, police say a man identified as Jonathan Watson came out with a bandaged leg and began fighting with officers.

After officers took Watson into custody, he became unresponsive. Police say officers tried to resuscitate him until fire fighters arrived. Watson was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Police say it is standard practice to conduct an administrative investigation when someone dies in police custody.
