HENRICO, Va. (AP) - Officials say the discolored water reported in Henrico County is not a public health concern.

Media outlets report some residents told officials that they noticed brownish water coming from their taps on Monday.

The Henrico Department of Public Utilities says the discoloration was caused by rust and sediment in pipes after work was done in the area of Staples Mill and Hermitage roads.

Officials are working to flush the lines to clear the rust and sediment. They say the water is expected to return to normal Tuesday.

The department’s director Arthur Petrini says the water is safe, and can’t be compared to that in Flint, Michigan.

Officials recommend customers avoid doing laundry until the situation is resolved because rust in the water can stain clothing.
