SLIDELL, La. (AP) - Longtime Slidell Police veteran Eugene Howard will serve as interim chief of the department.

In November, voters selected current chief, Randy Smith, as sheriff of St. Tammany Parish. He officially takes that post July 1.

Starting Monday, Howard will work with Smith until he turns over the reins at the end of June. A permanent replacement will be selected during a November special election.

Howard’s tenure with the Slidell Police Department began in the 1970s. He has served as chief of operations, S.W.A.T. and patrol commander, assistant chief of detectives, and assistant chief of police until he retired in 2007. Although retired, he continues to serve as a reserve officer.

Smith said Tuesday he has full confidence in Howard and will work closely with him to ensure a smooth transition.
