CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Illinois pitcher Cody Sedlock is the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America’s national pitcher of the week after striking out 14 against Ohio State.

Illinois said Tuesday that Sedlock is the first Illini player ever to win the award.

Sedlock pitched 10 2/3 innings in the 1-0 win over the Buckeyes Friday. It was the longest outing by a Division I pitcher so far this season. But the junior right-hander left what eventually became a 15-inning game without getting the decision for Illinois (20-17, 6-6 Big Ten).

Sedlock said in a news release that he believes his offseason workout regimen has him in good enough shape to endure long outings.

Sedlock was also the Big Ten’s pitcher of the week. He leads the conference with 84 strikeouts.
