BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Federal authorities have accused a western New York doctor of making his patients dependent on drugs.

U.S. Attorney William Hochul (HOH’-kuhl) says Eugene Gosy (GOH-see) was responsible for the mass distribution of prescription painkillers for profit.

Gosy was charged Tuesday in a 114-count indictment and is expected to appear in federal court on Wednesday to face drug, fraud and conspiracy charges.

There was no answer at his office Tuesday and a phone message left at his Clarence home wasn’t immediately returned.

Investigators say that for the past 10 years, the pain management doctor illegally prescribed addictive controlled substances in return for payments from patients and insurance companies. Authorities say it was obvious in some cases that patients were abusing the medication.
