LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - A 34-year-old man armed with at least one rifle shot his girlfriend and exchanged gunfire with police before killing himself inside the Lawrence apartment the couple shared.

Police responded to the scene around noon Tuesday for a report of shots fired on Melrose Street.

Mayor Daniel Rivera says responding officers were fired upon, and at least one officer returned fire. He says the man then barricaded himself inside the apartment.

Police say the man’s 36-year-old girlfriend was taken to Lawrence General Hospital with critical injuries. The couple’s 4-year-old son, who was in the apartment during the shooting, was unharmed. The couple’s 10-year-old child was in school at the time. Both children were placed in state custody.

Police haven’t released the man’s identity.

No further details were immediately available.
