ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The association representing the state’s prosecutors has requested an investigation into misconduct allegations against a district attorney in northern New York.

In a letter to the state judiciary’s Committee on Professional Standards, the District Attorneys Association says publicly reported controversies involving St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain should be investigated promptly.

Association President Thomas Zugibe (zuh-GIH’-bee) says they take no position on any allegations but the “crisis of confidence” in the criminal justice system needs to be resolved.

Last week, Judge Jerome Richards recused himself from matters handled by Rain. He cited a conflict created when he asked state court officials to investigate Rain for allowing a staffer who hadn’t yet passed the bar exam to prosecute a case.

A call to Rain wasn’t immediately returned.
