LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State has announced the hiring of Paul Weir as the men’s basketball head coach.

Weir was introduced during a news conference Tuesday afternoon in Las Cruces. He has been with the Aggies for the last nine seasons and has served as an associate head coach and defensive coordinator since July 2011.

He replaces Marvin Menzies, who left to take the head coaching job at UNLV.

NMSU athletics director Mario Moccia said Weir was chosen following a nationwide search that yielded several top candidates.

He described Weir as passionate, saying he’ll do everything in his power to keep the program successful and get students and the community excited about the team.

The Aggies won the WAC regular-season title after going 13-1 last season, but failed to win the conference tournament.
