MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama leader of a national veterans group has been arrested on a charge of embezzling from the organization.

Court records show 45-year-old Johnny Lee Waller of Wetumpka is charged with theft after authorities said he took more than $2,500 from the Alabama Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Waller tells WAAY-TV (https://bit.ly/24jU8ln) that he is innocent.

The state VFW referred questions to the national office, where spokeswoman Randi Law says Waller resigned on April 1 as state adjutant. The state website says Waller had been the state commander since 2014.

Law says an investigation into the finances of a local VFW chapter led to the state office in Montgomery.

Court documents show the charge was filed against Waller on April 12. He is free on $30,000 bond.
