ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A woman who told authorities there was a dead man in her Alexandria apartment has been accused of killing him.

Fairfax County Police announced Tuesday that 27-year-old Jessica Deneal-Whalen has been charged with second-degree murder on suspicion of strangling 51-year-old Raymond White in her apartment.

Deneal-Whalen had gone Monday to the South County Government Center to report the death.

Police spokesman Roger Henriquez says police responded to Deneal-Whalen’s apartment and found White’s body, which appeared to have signs of trauma on the neck. White was likely killed over the weekend.

Henriquez says White was Deneal-Whalen’s friend and had come to visit her. At some point, he says Deneal-Whalen became upset with White and assaulted him. Police didn’t give further details about the attack.

It’s unclear whether Deneal-Whalen has an attorney.
