HOUSTON (AP) - Officials have recovered the body of a 23-year-old woman who they say was missing after reversing her vehicle into a Southeast Texas retention pond as she tried to turn around to avoid floodwaters.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says Ariel Tapscott’s car was found Tuesday in the pond. She’d been missing since Sunday. The vehicle was discovered after a sheriff’s office helicopter had spotted tire tracks leading from a paved road into the retention pond on a nearly 400-acre ranch.

Investigators believe she had driven onto the ranch’s private road and followed it until standing floodwaters forced her to turn around. Then, as she backed up her vehicle to turn around, she drove backward into the pond.
