RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says May is Wildfire Awareness Month in the state.

The state Department of Agriculture says the goal is to inform the public about the dangers of wildfires and how citizens can protect themselves.

The agency says now is the time to act, not when smoke is in the air.

This year’s theme is “Do Your Part Before Wildfires Start.” It’s meant to encourage homeowners to take steps reduce the impacts of wildland fire.

The department says performing basic home maintenance now can markedly increase the chances that dwellings have to survive wildfires without intervention from fire officials.
