TROY, Mich. (AP) - A safe that looked like it could blow up didn’t discourage a thief in suburban Detroit.
Troy police say valuables from a safe were stolen from the home of a 90-year-old woman Tuesday, after a man posing as a tree trimmer got inside. The Detroit News (https://detne.ws/1NALLh9 ) says the safe was connected to two mortar shells to make any theft appear very risky, although the shells were not live.
Sgt. Meghan Lehman says the victim’s husband had served in World War II. State police were called to examine the safe.
Lehman says the woman was forced into another room while the thief grabbed the valuables.

This story has been corrected to show the contents of the safe were stolen, not the safe.
