GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Glendale has approved a $28 million deal with a Los Angeles-based arena management firm AEG Facilities for the operation of the Gila River Arena.

The deal is part of an effort to keep the Arizona Coyotes in Glendale, a city northwest of Phoenix. The hockey team was previously managing the arena but did not put a in a bid this year.

The Coyotes have been looking at other options the region, including Tempe or Phoenix. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has proposed a new arena there in an attempt to lure the hockey team.

The Glendale City Council unanimously approved the deal Tuesday night. The contract ends in 2021.

If the Coyotes leave after next season, AEG Facilities could renegotiate the deal or walk away.
