ATLANTA (AP) - A metro Atlanta police officer shot and killed a man who appeared to have a machete during a confrontation with the officer.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles says a DeKalb County officer fatally shot the man Wednesday morning. Miles says the officer responded to the scene after numerous 911 calls of a suspicious man in their neighborhood.

Miles says the officer attempted to speak with the man, who became agitated and attacked the officer with a machete. The officer used a baton to try to gain control, but was unsuccessful.

Miles says the officer pulled out his gun and fired.

The names and race of the officer and the man killed were not immediately released. The man was taken to Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
