IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Police have charged an Iowa City man after they found 62 ducks crowded in an abandoned van.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen (https://icp-c.com/1SQGJ29 ) reports 69-year-old Francis Prohaska faces an animal neglect charge after police discovered the ducks in a U-Haul van parked on the north side of Iowa City. The ducks were in stacked cages and covered in feces and feathers.

Police received a call Monday evening to report a bad odor coming from the van. Officials say 19 of the ducks were dead and there was no food or water available.

The ducks that survived are now at the Iowa City Animal Care Center, after being examined and fed.

The incident remains under investigation. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney for Prohaska.
