PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Portsmouth City Council has voted to fire city auditor Jesse Andre Thomas.

Media outlets report the council voted 5-2 Tuesday to terminate Thomas effective immediately. Vice Mayor Elizabeth Psimas led the effort.

Mayor Kenny Wright and Councilman Mark Whitaker voted against the motion. Whitaker called the move reckless and a disservice.

Councilman Curtis Edmonds says Thomas’ productivity was an issue.

The Virginian-Pilot reports Thomas completed two audits and two special projects in his three years employed with the city. He was hired in April 2013.

Councilman Bill Moody said there’s been no discussion on whether Thomas would be replaced or whether the position would be eliminated.

WAVY-TV reports after the meeting, Thomas said working for the city was a great opportunity, and also the most challenging job he’s ever had.
