CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) - The State Bureau of Investigation is probing a police shooting in Cullman.

Senior Trooper Johnathan Appling said in an emailed statement that an officer shot a man who was reportedly armed Tuesday night. Cullman police Lt. Jeff Warnke tells the Cullman Times (https://bit.ly/2448WYw ) 38-year-old Billy Joe Martin was shot once in the chest after an officer approached him.

Warnke says Officer Don Slocumb tried speaking with Martin, but he drew a weapon and refused to cooperate. Warnke says Martin had a warrant in Arab and fled police Monday night.

Appling says Martin was taken to Huntsville Hospital. Warnke says police will likely charge Martin for fleeing officers and Slocumb is on desk duty during the investigation.

Results of the investigation will be turned over to the Cullman County District Attorney.
