SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a Utah man was legally defending himself when he shot his girlfriend to death, but he will face other charges.

The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reported Tuesday that Riverdale police found a kitchen knife partially in 30-year-old Jenna Manuel’s hand, supporting her boyfriend’s story that he shot in her in self-defense on Feb. 7.

Scott Sandlin is facing seven drug and weapons counts after police said they found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the house the couple shared with her 8-year-old daughter.

The woman’s mother tells KUTV that she’s angry that he won’t be charged with murder. Carolyn Manuel says her daughter isn’t her to tell her side of the story.

No attorney was listed for Sandlin in court records Wednesday, and a publicly listed phone number for him was disconnected.
