WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - A high school basketball coach and teacher in Williston who’s accused of a sex crime is on administrative leave.

Thirty-three-year-old Walter Eldridge was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor sexual assault, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail.

The Minot Daily News reports court documents show Eldridge is accused of fondling a clothed 18-year-old girl last December. Authorities won’t say whether she is or was a student.

The Associated Press requested comment Thursday from defense attorney Jeff Nehring.

Eldridge is Williston’s head girls basketball coach and an English teacher. He’s due in court Friday for a preliminary hearing.

Williston Superintendent Viola LaFontaine tells the Williston Herald Eldridge is still employed by the school but was put on paid administrative leave April 14 while the school conducts its own investigation.
