MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Authorities will try to determine if the body of a man that washed up at a Los Angeles County beach is a 25-year-old swimmer who disappeared in the waves a week ago.

The body was found Wednesday at Dockweiler State Beach, about five miles north of Manhattan Beach, where Derrick Jeffries went missing while swimming with friends April 19.

Lifeguards and Coast Guard crews scoured the coastline for days for the Hawthorne resident.

The Daily Breeze newspaper (https://bit.ly/1rBPWj4) says Jeffries’ family has kept vigil on the sand since last week, with neighbors showing support and bringing them meals.

A spokesman says the family is awaiting confirmation from authorities about the body’s identification.

A former Army soldier, Jeffries also served in the National Guard.
