BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A former police officer convicted of stealing items from the Colchester Police Department’s evidence locker in 2014 is asking a federal court judge to spare him from jail time.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1NVszFB ) federal prosecutors, however, believe that 40-year-old Tyler Kinney should be sentenced as outlined by federal court guidelines on Monday.

The government’s sentencing memorandum states that Kinney’s sentencing range is between about four and six years behind bars.

The former officer pleaded guilty in May 2015 to heroin distribution, firearms trafficking and theft. Prosecutors say Kinney stole guns, drugs and cash from his former employer’s evidence locker.

Defense attorneys for Kinney say the Jericho man struggled from job-related stress before turning to drugs. They say Kinney initially started the evidence locker thefts to relieve his withdrawals.
