MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Prosecutors say a former Memphis police officer has been charged with raping a woman at a downtown parking garage.

The Shelby County district attorney’s office says 39-year-old Michael Smith was indicted Tuesday on charges of rape by coercion or force, rape of a physically incapacitated victim and rape of a victim unable to consent. He also was indicted on charges of sexual battery, official oppression and official misconduct.

Investigators say a 26-year-old woman said Smith sexually assaulted her in the early-morning hours of April 16 at a parking garage near Beale Street.

Smith resigned from the police department after the incident was reported. Online court records do not show if he has a lawyer.
